Literary theory
and discourse

Teun A. van Dijk taught literary theory and discourse studies (tekstwetenschap) in the Dept of General Literary Studies (Algemene Literatuurwetenschap) at the University of Amsterdam from 1968 to 1999, first as lecturer, and since 1980 at a personal chair of Discourse Studies, the first in the world. He retired from the University of Amsterdam in 2004.

In 1999 he moved to Barcelona, where he is
Visiting professor of Discourse Studies, in the
Dept. of Translation and Language Sciences,
Pompeu Fabra University. He retired in 2014,
but still gives classes in the Master Program of
Discourse Studies until 2023.

the UERJ

In 2016 he was visiting professor of the
Instituto de Estudos Sociais e Políticos
(IESP) of the Universidade Estadual de
Rio de Janeiro (UERJ)

Founded the
Centre of
Discourse Studies

In 2017 he founded the Centre of Discourse
Studies, Barcelona, where he participates in
online courses and directs the Seminario
Avanzado de Estudios del Discurso (SEAD) for
PhD students.

Teun A. van Dijk is Founding Director of the Centre of Discourse Studies, Barcelona, since 2017. He was professor of Discourse Studies at the University of Amsterdam until 2004, and at Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, until 2014.
