Discourse Cognition

Society

This is the website of Teun A. van Dijk (1943), director of the Centre of Discourse Studies, Barcelona, which he founded in 2017 after retiring in 2004 as professor of Discourse Studies at the University of Amsterdam and at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona in 2014.

The website is called “Discourse-Cognition-Society” because these are the three fundamental notions at the basis of his research, publications and teaching.

Teun A. van Dijk is one of the founders of Critical Discourse Studies, of which he especially represents the sociocognitive paradigm, based on the thesis that relations between discourse and society are cognitively mediated.

Research, publications and teaching of Teun A. van Dijk since the 1960 have focused on literary theory, text grammar, the psychology of text processing, (anti)racist discourse, news in the press, textbooks, and the relations between ideology, power, context, knowledge and discourse. His current research focuses on social movement discourse.

Teun A. van Dijk has lectured world-wide in many countries, especially in Latin America, where he founded, with Adriana Bolívar, the Asociación Latinoamericana de Estudios del Discurso (ALED) in 1995, and where he received honorary doctorates in Buenos Aires, Tucumán and Mendoza.

Projects

Since the early 1980s I have been engaged in various projects within the broader field of Critical Discourse Studies. The main project has been the study of (anti-)racist discourse. Other topics have been the relations between discourse and ideology, context, knowledge and, at the moment, social movements.
